“The best way to describe Expeditionary Learning in one statement would have to be “You’re never too prepared.” Over the years of ExL I picked up a multitude of skills ranging from using the restroom at the top of a mountain to being able to find the quadratic formula. Academically, it prepared me for high school so well that the math classes were made easy for me. Being able to calculate parabolas during 8th grade when Juniors in high school are just learning how to do that, puts Expeditionary learning into perspective. It prepares you for the next level. With all the group projects I did, I learned how to be confident, reliable and communicate effectively with people I barely knew, which is a very valuable skill to have in a work environment. It gave me the skills to evaluate a situation, and figure out a solution that is most effective.  Being able to go into  unfamiliar situations confidently and find my way around, is in my opinion, the most valuable skill. The best way to ensure that you are able to be performing in the world at an exceptional level or above is to prepare yourself for the world. This program prepares your social and academic skills so that you will easily be able to thrive in any environment you find yourself in.”

“Expeditionary Learning is a special place—unlike any program I have ever known. It teaches you lessons that most people will not learn for a long time. You learn what hard work means and how putting in that extra work is needed in order to be successful. It teaches you how to be efficient and to use your time effectively. The things you learn and the people you meet will stay with you forever. While the academic advantage Expeditionary Learning provides is amazing, possibly the most special part of this program is the community. You get to know everyone and you become very close. You create close bonds and relationships with so many people, that you form a family. By the end you realize how quickly it went by, and you wish it could last longer. That is what is so special about Expeditionary Learning.”

“As a fifth grader, I decided to apply and was accepted into Expeditionary Learning. This gave me the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and create lifelong memories. Expeditionary Learning taught me so many useful skills that will also help you throughout your life: organization, responsibility, being able to step out of your comfort zone, and a sense of community. You're able to explore different parts of California like national parks, museums, and cities. Along with these expeditions your knowledge will expand by learning through project-based learning and not just learning through books. It’s a way to have an adventurous experience throughout middle school with camping, hiking and backpacking in Yosemite.

Expeditionary Learning was a once in a life experience for my two children. If your child is looking for a challenge and likes to experience hands on learning both in and outside the classroom, then I would highly recommend this program. ExL provides a solid educational foundation, personal growth and development to prepare your child for high school and beyond. The teachers are very committed and are dedicated to their student’s success. Parent support and involvement is also key to the success of this program. There are many opportunities to get involved from driving on field trips, participating in fundraising committees, attending classroom presentations/projects to name a few. This is a great way to get to know the teachers and students and also see your own child grow.”
